2024

To be honest, as midnight struck & people said 'Happy New Year!' my mind was screaming  STOP, WAIT, REWIND PLEASE! I'm not done with 2023 - I'm not half the person I ought to be!  I'm not ready to go on. I felt left behind and weary. "The seasons march at Your command, The old departs, The new year comes." (Selah) Time zooms past or lingers painfully at the pace set by a sovereign, merciful God whose will and purposes are being fulfilled every passing minute.  The year won't slow down or expand to accommodate my agenda, but it does march steadily to the beat of its master drummer, conductor, composer.  Each year will not fail to accomplish His agenda. All the puzzle pieces, big and small, fall into place at exactly the right time. His sweet sovereignty over all things gives me grace to hope and wait with courage for the fulfillment of His promises. I can face the daunting challenges, heartbreaks, and joys of the new year with gladsome expectation. ...

John 1 - Key Observations and Themes

John the writer  pulls out all the stops to drive a point: Jesus is God, and we have seen His glory - believe Him!

John 1:1-18 Jesus is God in the flesh!

John 1:19-51 Witnesses attest to His identity.

Key themes and words:

• Jesus Christ as the Word, light, life, creator who became flesh and dwelt among men, manifesting the glory of the only Son from the Father

• Rejection and reception of Jesus

○ Incredible rejection (his own did not receive him)

○ The gift of Jesus to those who did receive him

• Witness testimonies - men and God

    • John the Baptist (Lamb of God, Son of God, He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit, Lord, Christ, He who comes after me who surpasses me because He is before me)
    • Andrew (Messiah)
    • Philip (the One Moses and the prophets wrote about)
    • Nathanael (Son of God and King of Israel)
    • The author himself (John) included in "we" have seen His glory
    • (as described by John the Baptist) Holy Spirit / Father (implied - "He who sent me"):

• Seeking and "finding" (credit: MacLaren*)

○ Jesus: What are you SEEKING? Andrew FINDS his brother: We have FOUND the Messiah

○ Jesus FOUND Philip. Philip to Nathanael: We have FOUND him of whom Moses in the Law and the prophets spoke of.

MacLaren on John 1:43

Every one who reads this chapter with even the slightest attention must observe how ‘seeking’ and ‘finding’ are repeated over and over again. Christ turns to Andrew and John with the question, ‘What seek ye?’ Andrew, as the narrative says, ‘findeth his own brother, Simon, and saith unto him, “We have found the Messias!”‘ Then again, Jesus finds Philip; and again, Philip, as soon as he has been won to Jesus, goes off to find Nathanael; and his glad word to him is, once more, ‘We have found the Messias.’ It is a reciprocal play of finding and seeking all through these verses.
